Let’s face it, our first reflex reaction when it comes to hearing something negative is to deny, deny, deny!

No, it can’t happen to me or someone that I love. It only happens to other people.

Next, we cry, then we get mad but eventually we come to the final phase in the grieving process which is acceptance.

Whether the final outcome is good or bad, accepting the inevitable or things that we cannot physically change can not only set us mentally free and give us a unique sort of peace of mind but it can also give us one of the greatest gifts of all, power.

Acceptance gives us the power to get our asses out of bed and fight!

With this new fighting spirit and attitude adjustment, here are a couple of tips to help further aid the acceptance of your sick or aging loved one:

Make Your Sick Or Aging Loved One Do As Much As They Can Do For Themselves!

And I stress the word, “make!” Sometimes good ol’ fashioned encouragement is not enough. Sometimes a person has got to put their foot down. So, do not, I repeat, DO NOT LET YOUR LOVED ONE SIT ON HIS OR HER ASS! If your loved one is physically able or having periods where they are not feeling too nauseous or sickly, make them do certain things for themselves such as light house cleaning or paying the electric bill online. Who cares if they complain, let them! Who cares if they get pissed off at you, let them! Making your loved one do as much as they can do for themselves not only benefits you but them as well by giving them a sense of purpose and renewed sense of self-worth and can help alleviate those feelings of helplessness, even though they may not be able to see it. Bottom line: Make your sick or aging loved one do as much as they possibly can do for themselves!

Seek Out Assistance If You Need It!
Remember, there ain’t no shame in asking for help when you need it regardless if it is only a five minute ride to the doctor’s office. Everybody needs help at some point in their lives and no one person can do it alone all the time. Let’s face it, there are alot of people out there like me who are squeamish when it comes to needles and blood. So i’m a person who definitely needs help when it comes to those things. Get the picture? So ask for help when you need it. Whether the help you seek is from a professional care giver service, an independent home health aid or friend and family members, ask for help if you need it no matter what. Don’t be afraid to ask for help even if your sick or aging loved one doesn’t want you to or gets mad. In this case, compromise or find some common ground by being discreet or choosing together a person or persons that can assist you.

Try To Provide Care For Loved Ones At A Time Most Convenient For You!
I will stress the word, “try.” I know that some people may find that this sounds selfish or self-serving and that this may not be at all entirely possible or realistically in the cards but if you can, try to provide care for your sick or aging loved one at your convenience. It’s good for your psyche. For instance, if you work an eight hour shift, try to take at least a 1 to 2 hour break in between completing tasks for your loved one. Because again, let’s face it, nobody truly wants to work a full-time shift then come home and work another part-time or full-time care giver shift without having some much needed rest or downtime in between.

Don’t Forget To Take Care Of Yourself Too!
So many times we are so busy taking care of someone else’s needs that we neglect our own which is one of the worst things that we can do. If we don’t take care of ourselves then who is going to take care of our sick or aging loved one. They need us as much as we need them. So here’s your personal kick in the ass! Remember to take as many rest breaks as you can throughout the day. Try to eat as healthy as you can and get as much physical exercise too. And if you happen to pass by a pastry shop with a delectable looking chocolate cake in it, go in there and buy yourself a piece. Spoil, reward and do little things for yourself! After all, you deserve it and your sick or aging loved one deserves it too.
